Global 5G Benchmark Report Summary (Q1-Q2 2021)
Core Content
This report provides an analysis of 5G performance and availability in 30 major cities worldwide during Q1 and Q2 of 2021. It evaluates three key metrics: 5G download speed, 5G upload speed, and 5G Availability. Additionally, it compares the performance of top mobile network operators in select cities.
Key Metrics
- 5G download speed: Measured in Mbps, indicates how quickly data can be pulled from a server to a 5G-capable device.
- 5G upload speed: Measured in Mbps, indicates how quickly data can be sent from a 5G-capable device to the internet.
- 5G Availability: Measured as a percentage, indicates the proportion of users on 5G-capable devices that spend the majority of their time on 5G networks.
5G Speeds in Major Cities
- Seoul had the fastest 5G download speed at 467.87 Mbps.
- Abu Dhabi (421.26 Mbps), Dubai (417.07 Mbps), Doha (413.40 Mbps), and Riyadh (384.66 Mbps) followed closely.
- Warsaw had the slowest download speed at 80.18 Mbps.
- Upload speeds were generally between 15 Mbps and 40 Mbps, with Seoul and Beijing as outliers on the high end (49.92 Mbps and 44.15 Mbps, respectively), and Manila as an outlier on the low end (8.85 Mbps).
5G Availability in Major Cities
- 5G Availability was below 50% in most cities, indicating that users were not consistently connected to 5G networks.
- New York and Amsterdam had the highest availability at 73.5% and 51.2%, respectively.
- Seoul had the third highest availability at 48.0%.
- Other cities like Johannesburg, Singapore, Rome, Paris, and Berlin had significantly lower availability, with Johannesburg at 1.4%.

- 3 and csl followed.
- 5G Availability: csl (41.6%), China Mobile (25.2%), 3 (26.9%), SmarTone (27.3%).
Johannesburg
- MTN had the highest download speed (288.33 Mbps).
- Vodacom was second (202.00 Mbps).
- 5G Availability was not yet reported due to early 5G rollout.
Madrid
- Vodafone had the fastest download speed (304.62 Mbps) and upload speed (35.28 Mbps).
- Orange and Yoigo followed.
- 5G Availability: Orange (34.0%), Vodafone (30.5%), Movistar (24.5%).
Prague
- O2 had the fastest download speed (144.66 Mbps) and upload speed (36.55 Mbps).
- T-Mobile and Vodafone followed.
- 5G Availability data was insufficient due to low sample counts.
Seoul
- LG U+ and SK Telecom had the fastest download speeds (522.28 Mbps and 521.44 Mbps, respectively).
- SK Telecom had the highest 5G Availability at 50.0%, followed by LG U+ (48.3%) and KT (45.3%).
Main Findings
- Seoul led in both 5G download speed and availability.
- Middle Eastern cities (e.g., Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh) had the strongest 5G performance.
- European cities (e.g., Berlin, Paris, Warsaw) had weaker 5G performance and availability.
- 5G Availability was generally low across cities, with only New York and Amsterdam exceeding 50%.
- Operator performance varied significantly, with some cities having limited data due to early 5G rollouts or low sample sizes.
Conclusion
The report highlights that while 5G download speeds are impressive globally, availability remains a challenge in many regions. Operators in the Middle East outperformed their counterparts in Europe and other areas. As 5G continues to expand, consistent availability and performance will be key to unlocking its full potential.
