WHO-UNICEF Nutrition Monitoring Team Meeting Summary (Fifteenth Meeting, 2023)

Date: 20–21 September 2023
Key Objectives:

Session 1: Anaemia Working Group Updates

  • Proposed solution: Frame venous blood as best practice, avoid direct recommendation to cease capillary use until WHO systematic review results.

Session 2: Anthropometry Data Quality Working Group Updates

  • Use data communities (e.g., Data for Nutrition) for dissemination.

Session 3: Healthy Diets Monitoring Initiative (HDMI) Updates

• Role: Facilitate coordination on healthy diet monitoring (no direct TEAM lead).
• Governance: Core Technical Group (biweekly) and Strategic Planning Group (WHO/UNICEF/FAO leads).
• 2023–2025 Workplan:

  • Slow progress due to membership uncertainty; define priority areas (adolescents, quality care).

Session 6: Global Targets and Indicators 2025–2030

• Update: Efforts to extend 2025 MIYCN targets to 2030.
  • Proposals for process indicators (e.g., for MDD-W) under review.
  • Short timeline (document due mid-2024), potential TEAM input welcome.

Session 7: Gestational Weight Gain Standards Project

  • 16-member TAG established; 52 studies submitted for data harmonization.
  • Focus on defining eligibility criteria; global call for data launched.
• Next Steps:
  • Three working groups formed to refine standards by end-2023.

Session 8: Prioritizing New TEAM Tasks

  1. NNS Guidance: Define essential indicators for national nutrition surveys.
  2. NCDs: Explore link between nutrition and noncommunicable diseases.
  3. SAC & Adolescent Nutrition: Address gaps in monitoring frameworks.
• Recommendations:

Session 9: TEAM Workplan & Working Groups

Session 10: TEAM Governance
