WIPO Academy: Key Findings 2020

• Role:WIPO Academy serves as the intellectual property (IP) education and capacity-building hub for WIPO member states, prioritizing developing countries, LDCs, and transition economies.

• Participation Trends (2016–2020):

  • Global course participation increased significantly: 55,586 in 2016 to 151,506 in 2020.
  • Exponential growth in demand, especially in 2020, driven by digital transformation and access to online learning.
  • 75% of participants from academia (45%) and the private sector (30%). 25% from government/public sectors.

• Demographics:

  • Gender: New majority of female participants (54%) in courses.
  • Age: 86% of participants aged 18–44.
  • Geographic Distribution: Asia-Pacific (63k+ participants) and Latin America and the Caribbean (46k+) maintained leading roles.

• DL Program (Distance Learning):

  • 2020 DL participants: 149,810, with a 24% increase from 2019.
  • Dominated by online courses, enhanced by digital delivery during COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Courses widely delivered in English, Chinese, Spanish, and French.

• COVID-19 Impact:

  • Digital transformation of programs (online/blended learning) enabled continuity.
  • Summer Schools adapted to hybrid formats; some moved entirely digital.
  • JMD programs redesigned to accommodate digital delivery.

• Projects & Partnerships:

  • IPTI Project: Supported 10 national IP training institutions, reaching over 250K participants.
  • Customized Courses: 23 Member States customized DL courses for national use.
  • Accessibility: Offered accessible DL course materials in UN languages and Portuguese for visually impaired users.
  • Collaborations: New courses on topics like patent drafting, IP enforcement, life sciences, exports, and creative industries introduced with external partners.

• Summer Schools:

  • 2020: Six schools held online/hybrid format; 1,292 participants—majority from academia/private sector (Academy now 69%); increase over 2019.

• Joint Master’s Degrees:

  • 221 graduates in 2020; majority from private sector (28%) and female (56%). Largest regional group from Africa.

• Professional Development (PDP):

  • COVID-19 forced shift to online delivery; reduced program from 440 to 183 participants in 2020. Emphasis now on blended learning courses.

• Future Focus:

  • Prioritize IP skills-building; explore certification in knowledge and skills.
  • Expand use of IPTIs as key partners for national IP training.
  • Further digitization of training programs.

• Support from Donors: Increased funding from Japan FIT/JP Global (100+ scholarships), Korea FIT/KREDU, and China FIT/CSC/CNIPA.

• 2020 Performance: Demonstrated adaptability and innovation in support of global IP training amid pandemic.
