This report assesses the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), substance use, mental health, and risk factors among adults in Palau.
Key Findings
Health Outcomes
- Over half the adult population (52%) reported being in fair or poor self-perceived health.
- Limited access to healthcare: 48% did not see a medical provider in the last year, and 73% did not see a dentist.
- High prevalence of NCDs and risk factors:
- Hypertension: 39.4%
- Overweight/Obesity: 70.2%
- Diabetes (undiagnosed): 12.62%, making self-reported total 17.8%
- High Cholesterol: 20.0%
- Gout, Arthritis, Asthma, Ulcer, Heart disease, Depression, Stroke, Lung Disease, and Cancer also have significant prevalence.
Biometric Measures & Chronic Disease
- High rates of overweight/obesity (70.2%) and hypertension (39.4%) were observed, with higher rates among Palauans.
- Significant gender disproportion in obesity prevalence.
- Chronic disease rates differ by age/ethnicity, with higher rates among older adults and Palauans.
Risk Behaviors

NCD Screening

US Comparison
Palau generally has consistently higher rates of almost all health outcomes and risk behaviors compared to the United States.
Recommendations
- Prioritize reduction of NCD risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, overweight/obesity).
- Target interventions specifically for Palauan populations.
- Strengthen prevention programs and support evidence-based interventions.
- Improve access to and uptake of NCD screening.
- Enhance cessation services available.
