Dominican Republic 2016 Global School-based Student Health Survey Summary

Dietary Behaviors:

• Overweight and Obesity: High prevalence (32.4% for overweight and 12.0% for obesity) mostly seen in 13-15 year-olds (32.4% overweight, 12.0% obese).
• Carbonated Soft Drink Consumption: Very high daily consumption rate (75.3%) highest among the youngest and lowest among 16-17 year-olds (73.0%).

Drug Use:

• Ever used marijuana: Lowest rate among overall 13-17 year-olds (4.3%), highest in 16-17 females (24.3%).

Hygiene:

• Daily tooth cleaning/brushing & handwashing after toilet use: Good hygiene generally reported, with over 90% reporting daily tooth care and most (94.4%) cleaning/brushing teeth daily. Handwashing rates are slightly lower (92.7%) but representative of overall high compliance.

Mental Health:

• Suicidal Ideation & Attempts: Both serious consideration of suicide and suicide attempts were most common among 13-15 year-olds.
• Having close friends: Only a small minority reported no close friends.

Physical Activity:

• Daily physical activity (60+ minutes): Low prevalence (around 12-15%) especially among older teens (8.1%).
• Participation in PE Classes: Participated for 3+ days/week (36.3% overall).

Protective Factors:

• Rules Broken at School: Nearly a quarter missed school without permission.
• Parent/Reports Understanding Problems: Good level of understanding reported (46.2%).
• Parent/Guardian Monitoring: Good level of monitoring reported (59.0%).

Sexual Behaviors:

• Ever Had Sexual Intercourse: Higher prevalence in males (47.0% in 13-15, 59.6% in 16-17), lower in females (16.9%, 26.6%). Many were sexually active before age 14 (especially young males).
• Condom Use in Last Intercourse: Most sexually active respondents reported using a condom (63.0% overall 13-15, 69.6% overall 16-17).

Tobacco Use:

• Current Tobacco Use: Highest overall (11.7%) and among males older than 16.
• Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (people smoking in presence): Up to nearly half reported exposure daily.

Violence and Unintentional Injury:

• Physical fights (last 12 months): Higher among older adolescents and males.
• Serious physical injury (last 12 months): Highest rate among 16-17 year-old males (35.3%).
• Bullying: High prevalence reported (nearly 25%), highest in males ages 16-17.
