India Andaman and Nicobar Islands Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2005 Summary:

• Methodology: A two-stage cluster sample survey involving 855 students aged 13-15 from standard 8 to 10 in schools. Response rates were 100% for schools and classes, with 88.4% student participation.
• Prevalence: Overall, 14.7% of students currently used any form of tobacco. Breakdown: 3.3% smoked cigarettes (boys 13.1%, girls 8.2%), and 12.1% used other tobacco products (boys 16.5%, girls 8.4%).
• Determinants: High exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), with 57.2% exposed outside home and 35.2% at home in the past week. Students were taught about tobacco dangers (56.3%) and discussed reasons for use (45.3%), but over half saw pro-cigarette ads.
• Knowledge and Attitudes: Majorities (e.g., 53.8%) support public smoking bans, while some (19.7%) believe smoking enhances attractiveness. Concerns about SHS were higher among a minority.
• Media and Advertising: 53.2% viewed anti-smoking messages, but also 35.4% saw pro-cigarette ads on hoardings or in media; 10.8% were offered free cigarettes.
• School Curriculum: More than half learned about tobacco risks (55.0%), but media exposure was significant.
