Survey Overview: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), part of the Global Tobacco Surveillance System, was conducted in Greece in 2013 by the National School of Public Health and the Ministry of Health. It is a nationally representative school-based survey for students aged 13-15, with an overall response rate of 87.7% and 4,618 eligible participants.

Tobacco Use: 13.3% of students used any tobacco product, with higher rates among boys (14.9%) than girls (12.5%). Cigarette smoking affected 10.1% of students (10.3% boys, 9.9% girls), and smokeless tobacco use was reported by 1.5% (higher in boys). Electronic cigarette use among ever users was 5.5%, with current users at 2.8%.

Cessation: 60% of current cigarette smokers tried to quit in the past 12 months, and over 40% desired to stop smoking immediately. Among current smokers, 87.3% were not prevented from buying cigarettes due to age.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure: High exposure rates were observed: 56.7% at home, 67.4% inside enclosed public places, and 68.4% at outdoor public places.

Access and Media: Data showed that 40.9% of students noticed tobacco advertisements or promotions at points of sale, and 53.6% encountered anti-tobacco messages in media. About 88.2% saw tobacco use depicted in television or movies.

Knowledge and Attitudes: Strong attitudes were recorded, with 77.2% believing smoking is harmful, 82.1% supporting bans in enclosed public places, and most students viewed smoking at celebrations negatively. 96% felt tobacco use is difficult to quit once started.

Methodology: The survey used a standard core questionnaire with optional modules, self-administered via bubble sheets for anonymity. Key indicators include tobacco use, cessation attempts, SHS exposure, and media awareness. Data weighted to be nationally representative.
