报告摘要
Mexico - Culican Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The Mexico - Culican GYTS is a school-based survey conducted in 2005 among 1,247 students aged 13-15 using a two-stage cluster sampling design. Key findings include high prevalence of tobacco use, with 29.8% having ever smoked cigarettes and 14.6% currently using any tobacco product. Specifically, 10.7% currently smoke cigarettes, and 5.9% use other tobacco forms. About 21.2% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking.
Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is significant, with 34.3% living in homes where others smoke and 47.1% exposed to smoke outside the home. Most students (93.4%) believe SHS is harmful and support banning smoking in public places.
Among current smokers, 68.3% want to stop, and 66.4% have attempted to quit in the past year. Media exposure shows high awareness, with 86% seeing anti-smoking messages recently, but also 56.8% seeing pro-tobacco ads. School-based education on smoking risks was delivered to many students.
This survey highlights high tobacco use and SHS exposure among youth in this region, suggesting the need for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
