PEW INTERNET PROJECT DATA MEMO Summary (June 2005)
Key Findings
-
More than 55% (around 7 million people) of adult internet users sought "how-to", "do-it-yourself", or repair information online.
-
This activity was less common than getting news online (72%) or researching products/services online (78%).
-
Having high-speed internet connections at home and work was strongly correlated with seeking DIY information online, increasing the probability by approximately 5-11% compared to slower connections.
-
Younger users (under-50) were more likely to seek DIY information online than older users (47% vs. 59% vs. 60% respectively).
-
Men were somewhat more likely to seek DIY information online than women (60% vs. 50%).
-
Those with some college education were more likely to seek DIY information online than those with only a high school degree (58% vs. 50%).
Scope
-
The data comes from a national phone survey of 2,201 adults conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International in February-March 2005.
-
The margin of error for results based on internet users (n=1,450) was ±3%.
-
Data showed that while "how-to" sites often focus on home improvement, this category actually includes advice on diverse topics via sites with wide-ranging content.
