• Overall Situation: From weeks 1 to 44 in 2024, 22,561 suspected meningitis cases were reported across 24 countries, with 1,237 deaths (case fatality rate = 5.5%). No epidemic threshold was crossed in most areas, but alerts were active in 12 districts across six countries.

• Key Findings:

  • Angola: 409 cases, 96 deaths, high CFR; one district crossed alert threshold.
  • Benin: 1,813 cases, 24 deaths, low CFR; several districts in alert phase.
  • Burkina Faso: 1,454 cases, 56 deaths, moderate CFR; no alerts.
  • Highest case load in Niger (3,415 cases), Nigeria (3,319 cases).

• Laboratory Data: 2,063 positive test results from 12,359 samples; main pathogens were Neisseria meningitidis C (40.1%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (25.5%). Countries are advised to improve laboratory testing and sample handling.

• Vaccination Strategy: Introduction of the Men5CV vaccine in Niger and Nigeria. Niger plans mass vaccination in 192 districts targeting children aged 1-19 years, while Nigeria will conduct targeted campaigns in 11 states and 18 LGAs.
