Summary of MDSC Meningitis Weekly Bulletin (Week 25, 2008)
Weekly Epidemiological Situation
For week 25 (June 16-22, 2008), 216 suspected meningitis cases were reported across the region, with 17 deaths (7.9% lethality). Countries with cases included Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and the Republic of Congo, while others had no or limited data. No districts were in epidemic or alert phase.
Year-to-Date Synthesis (Weeks 1-25)
Cumulatively, Burkina Faso was the most affected country with 9,578 suspected cases and 941 deaths, with 20 districts in epidemic phase. Ghana needs to improve data reporting, Cameroon had no activity, and the epidemic season is subsiding. Overall mortality rate was 9.4%.
Pathogen Identification
Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A (NmA) was the predominant pathogen. Few CSF samples were collected and tested, highlighting data limitations.
