5G Connectivity: A Key Enabling Technology for Meeting America's Climate Change Goals
5G networks are positioned as the most energy-efficient generation of wireless technology, capable of reducing carbon emissions by supporting connected devices and enabling efficiency gains in key U.S. industries. By 2025, 5G-enabled use cases could abate up to 330.8 MMtCO₂e, contributing approximately 20% toward the U.S. 2030 target of a 50-52% reduction from 2005 levels.
Carbon Abatement by Sector:
- Transportation & Cities: 86.5 MMtCO₂e (19 million vehicles off the road)
- Manufacturing: 67.4 MMtCO₂e (156 million barrels of oil saved)
- Energy & Buildings: 67.9 MMtCO₂e (equivalent to powering 12.3 million homes)
- Agriculture: 27.8 MMtCO₂e (reducing farming-related emissions)
- Working, Living & Health: 81.1 MMtCO₂e (telemedicine and remote work)
Key Use Cases Driving Abatement:
- Transportation: Connected vehicles, autonomous driving, smart traffic management.
- Manufacturing: Remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, process automation.
- Energy & Buildings: Smart grids, building energy management, IoT-powered efficiency.
- Agriculture: Precision farming, drone-based spraying, connected crop monitoring.
- Healthcare: Telemedicine, XR-enabled consultations, remote patient monitoring.
Supporting Infrastructure:
- The deployment of 5G networks enables downstream applications through enhanced connectivity, ultra-low latency, and support for high-density devices.
- Upstream 5G technical efficiencies (e.g., beamforming, mMIMO, vRAN) directly improve energy use per bit of data.
Recommendations:
- Align Sustainability and Technology Strategy: Integrate 5G into broader sustainability goals, monitoring ESG performance.
- Foster Innovation and Collaboration: Build coalitions with stakeholders to develop carbon-reducing use cases and scale impact.
- Track and Report Progress: Utilize real-time data to measure and verify abatement contributions from 5G deployment.
The U.S. 5G rollout, coupled with renewable energy commitments from carriers and manufacturers, presents a critical opportunity to accelerate the nation's transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
