GYTS Summary: UAE 2013 Tobacco Use Among Youth
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) monitors youth tobacco use, conducted in the United Arab Emirates in 2013. This 2013 survey, led by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, involved 3,376 students aged 13-15 with a 93.2% response rate, providing nationally representative data.
Key Findings Overview:
- Tobacco Prevalence: 10.5% of students had used any tobacco product, with higher rates among boys (14.6%) vs. girls (6.4%). Specifically, smoking (cigarettes or medwakh) was most common, and cessation attempts were high.
- Smoking: 6.2% smoked cigarettes, with boys (9.7%) more affected than girls (2.7%).
- Smokeless Tobacco: 3.4% used medwakh, with boys (4.1%) more frequent users than girls (2.6%).
- Cessation: 61.5% of smokers tried to quit in the past year, and 49.0% wanted to stop immediately.
- Secondhand Smoke: 25.2% were exposed at home, and 45.7% experienced exposure in enclosed public places.
- Access: 47.4% of smokers obtained cigarettes easily from stores or other outlets.
- Media and Attitudes: 54.9% noticed anti-tobacco messages, and 81.3% supported smoking bans in public spaces. High awareness and negative attitudes toward tobacco use were evident across youth.
- Support for Control: Strong advocacy for measures like smoking bans, with low susceptibility to future tobacco use among students.
