报告摘要
Summary of Meningitis Weekly Bulletin for Week 02, 2013
Epidemiological Situation
The overall epidemic situation for week 02, 2013, remains calm, with no districts reported in alert or epidemic status. Total cases recorded were 187 across various West African countries, with 18 deaths and a 9.6% lethality rate. Specific country data includes: Benin (14 cases, 0 deaths), Burkina Faso (71 cases, 10 deaths), Guinea (2 cases, 2 deaths, 100% lethality), and Nigeria (3 cases, 0 deaths). Districts previously above alert thresholds in Benin returned to normal. Silent countries were urged to submit timely data and enhance surveillance.
Synthesis of Data for Weeks 01 and 02
Cumulative cases from weeks 01-02 total 440, with 42 deaths, higher than the 300 and 31 deaths reported during the same period in 2012. All countries maintained 100% data completeness for reporting weeks, except for Comorre and others with varying week coverage. No epidemic districts reached thresholds, and countries with partial or full MenAfriVac vaccination should laboratory confirm all suspected meningitis cases and investigate any Neisseria meningitidis type A (NmA) instances to ensure epidemic control.
Laboratory Data Summary
Laboratory identification of pathogens was inconsistent across countries, with only a fraction of cases confirmed by methods such as PCR or culture. Nm meningitidis was the predominant pathogen in most cases, but there were poor laboratory confirmation rates overall, including in regions outside the meningitis belt. Total pathogens identified spanned weeks 01-02, with notable cases from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, RD Congo, Togo, and Sudan, but Spneumococcus (Spn) was frequently undetected. Strengthened laboratory services were emphasized.
Additional Notes
Graphical data from weeks 01-02 includes a map of cumulative attack rates based on available notifications and a comparative weekly evolution chart for countries that submitted data. Commentary highlights no epidemic activity and calls for improved reporting and surveillance among silent nations. Laboratory confirmation remains the key for accurate disease monitoring and response.
