Based on data up to June 11, 2023:

Global Overview

• Nearly 1.5 million new COVID-19 cases and 7,300 deaths were reported globally over the past 28 days.
• All six WHO regions reported decreases in cases and deaths compared to the previous 28-week period (Cumulative: >767M cases, >6.9M deaths).
• Global case reporting remains low (+14% of countries reporting cases recently, declining since mid-2022), indicating data underreporting.

Hospitalizations & ICU Admissions

• 75,189 new hospitalizations and 2,015 new ICU bed-days were reported globally over the last 28 days.
• Hospitalizations decreased by 36% (vs previous 28 days), while ICU admissions decreased by 41%. Data are preliminary with significant reporting delays.

SARS-CoV-2 Variants

• Two Variants of Interest (VOIs): XBB.1.5 (global leader, also declining) and XBB.1.16 (also declining).
• Seven Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs). Trends vary: Some decline, some increase slightly; XBB.1.9.1 is the dominant VUM.
• WHO continuously assesses variants impacting disease severity, testing effectiveness, etc.

  • All African sub-regions decreased cases (ranges: -60% to -76%), deaths (-21% to -60%).
  • All Americas nations decreased cases (-30%), deaths (-60%).
  • All European nations decreased cases (-43%), deaths (-32%). European Union specific: Cases (-43%), Deaths (-30%).
  • All SE Asia countries decreased cases (-80%), deaths (-41%).
  • All W. Pacific nations decreased cases (-16%), deaths (-31%) except Japan's data point showed an increase.
• Specific country trends: Global leaders in cases (Korea, Aus, Brazil). Leaders in deaths (Brazil, Russia, Italy).
