COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update Summary
Global Overview
- As of 1 January 2023, the past week (26 Dec 2022 - 1 Jan 2023) reported a 22% decrease in new cases (3 million) and a 12% decrease in deaths (10,000) compared to the previous week.
- However, trends must consider reduced testing and holiday reporting delays, likely leading to incomplete data. Data, especially recent, should be interpreted cautiously.
- Over the last 28 days (6 Dec 2022 - 1 Jan 2023), cases and deaths (14.5 million, +25% & 21%) increased compared to the prior 28 days.
- Cumulatively since the start, over 656 million cases and >6.6 million deaths have been reported globally.
- Regional hotspots included Japan, Republic of Korea, US, China, Brazil for new cases.
- Countries reporting high new deaths included US, Japan, Brazil, France, China.
SARS-CoV-2 Variants
- As of 2 January 2023, the Omicron variant accounted for 98.4% of reported sequences globally (105,428 sequences analyzed, 103,723 from Omicron).
- BA.5 and its lineages remain dominant, while BA.2 and its lineage BA.2.75 are increasing.
- Cases (BA) and deaths attribute are continuing to decrease globally.
- WHO monitors six variants (BQ.1, BA.5x5, BA.2.75, BA.4.6, BA.2.3.20, XBB) which now account for 74.4% of sequences.
- No increased severity associated with these monitored variants compared to prior Omicron lineages is indicated.
WHO Regional Overviews

Hospitalizations and ICU Admissions
- Global data for week 51 (19-25 Dec): 23,696 new hospitalizations and 32 new ICU admissions reported (preliminary, subject to change, references previous week data).
- Weekly disease counts likely undercount true incidence due to differing test strategy changes globally.
Data Interpretation
- All data should be interpreted with caution due to variable reporting completeness, delays, sequencing capacity differences, and changes in testing strategies which undercount true cases/deaths.
