Part I. Epidemiological Situation (Weeks 36-39)

• Cumulative Cases & Deaths: From August 31 to September 27, 2015, 669 suspected meningitis cases were reported across 18 countries, with 43 deaths, giving a lethality rate of 6.4%.
• Alert/Epidemic Thresholds: Exceeded in Congo (Cameroon) (district of Bangoura). No district reached epidemic levels.
• Vaccination Status:
  • Partial vaccination countries (MenAfriVac): Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria.
  • Fully vaccinated countries (MenAfriVac): Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal.
• Completeness of Data: Data coverage was 100% for most countries except Central African Republic (75%).

Part II. Synthesis (All Weeks 2015)

• Total Cases by Country:
  • Cameroun had the highest cases in the period (2,655).
  • Congo (Democratic Republic) showed gaps in data completeness and applicability of thresholds due to geographical factors.
• Lethality: Nigeria had the highest lethality rate at 4.9% in endemic areas.
• Alert/Epidemic Districts: A total of 29 districts reached alert thresholds, mostly in partially vaccinated countries like Niger (13 districts).

Part III. Laboratory Data (All Weeks 2015)

• Sample Analysis: 7,453 CSF samples were tested, with only 33% of cases confirmed by lab results.
• Predominant Pathogen:
  • Serogroup C (NmC): Most common (47.7%), followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) at 24.2%.
  • Others: Neisseria meningitidis W135 (NmW), Neisseria meningitidis X/Y (NmX/Y), etc.
