Cerebrospinal Meningitis Weekly Bulletin Summary
I. Epidemiological Situation Week 04 (23–29 January 2006)
- Burkina Faso: High alert in 2 districts, epidemic in 1 district. Cases: 197, Deaths: 33, Mortality: 16.8%. Attack rates: 8.3% in Sector 15 Bobo, 7.1% in Dano, and 14.1% in Solenzo.
- Niger: Alert in 47 cases, 9 deaths, mortality 19.1%. Germs: 3 Nmeningitis (Nm) and 4 S. pneumoniae.
- Mali, Niger, Togo, Chad: Sustained or increased incidence.
- Total for Week 04: Cases: 290, Deaths: 47, Mortality: 16.2%. Predominant pathogens: Nmeningitis and S. pneumoniae.
II. Synthesis of 2006 Data (Weeks 01–04)
- Alert Thresholds: 4 districts in 3 countries (Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo) reached alert levels. Burkina Faso had cases crossing epidemic thresholds.
- Notified Cases: Burkina Faso led with 929 cases and 154 deaths (16.6% mortality). Chad had a high mortality rate at 27.3%.
III. Pathogen Identification
- NmA: Dominant in Niger (95 cases). Also found in Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad, etc.
- S. pneumoniae and Hib: Identified in Mali (1 case) and Burkina Faso.
- Total Pathogens: 127 identified, with Nm being most common.
IV. Graphical Data
- Time series comparisons for 2005–2006 show increasing trends in cases in several countries (Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo). Data by week and country, highlighting regions with higher attack rates.
