Key Global Initiatives

• International IPC Expert Meeting: A meeting in Geneva (27-29 August) focused on implementation strategies for the WHO Global Action Plan and Monitoring Framework (GAP/MF) on IPC. It aimed to update an implementation guide, enhance country capacity for HAI surveillance, address IPC needs in emergencies, prioritize IPC training, and review implications of proposed airborne pathogen terminology.
• Monkeypox (Mpox): WHO declared Mpox outbreak in the DRC and the African region a PHEIC. New guidance and resources on mpox clinical management, PPE use, and WASH measures were released.

• Special Journal Issue: Call for papers for a 'Journal of Hospital Infection' special issue on integrated IPC and AMS strategies to combat AMR.

Country & Regional Updates

• Mauritius: Successfully completed a second national IPC programme workshop, resulting in a new five-year program based on the WHO GAP/MF.
• Solomon Islands / Western Pacific Region: IPC practices improved through training using a WHO simulation module; MHMS prioritizes IPC.
• Tajikistan: Strengthened IPC through updated national guidelines, training of over 8000 health workers, and partnerships focused on AMR stewardship and surveillance, despite funding challenges. An IPC monitoring and evaluation team is being trained.

Partnerships

• Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA): Launching the 'Global Sepsis Agenda – 2030' on 10 September followed by Global Sepsis Day on 13 September.
• Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) 2024 (13-19 October): A global initiative by APIC encouraging participation to focus on various IPC themes each day.
