1. World Hand Hygiene Day 2024

  • A virtual badge to show commitment to the campaign, available for download in early April.

2. Webinar Series for WHHD 2024

• A series of three inter-linked webinars is planned leading up to WHHD:
  • 16 April: Overview of the 2024 campaign and proposed activities.
  • 23 April: Special webinar on "My 5 Moments: The Game" – an innovative digital tool for hand hygiene education.
  • 6 May: Annual global webinar to discuss the value of IPC and hand hygiene education.

3. Global Survey on IPC Minimum Requirements

• A multi-level global survey on IPC minimum requirements at national and facility levels is ongoing.
• The deadline has been extended to 20 April 2024.
• The survey is available in English, French, Spanish, and Russian.
• Participation is encouraged to help shape IPC strategies and improve practices.

4. OpenWHO Courses on IPC

• The IPC Channel on OpenWHO was the most popular in 2023.
• It offers a range of courses, including:
  • Standard precautions
  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • Hand hygiene in the context of infectious diseases
  • Bloodstream infections
  • Healthcare-associated infection (HAI) surveillance

5. IPC Technical Mission in Zambia

• A WHO IPC technical mission was deployed to support the Zambia cholera response.
• The mission included four IPC specialists from different WHO levels.
• Key activities:
  • Co-development of an IPC monitoring tool with the Ministry of Health (MoH).
  • Creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and communication materials.
  • Conducting assessments of resource availability and IPC practices in health facilities.
  • Delivering practical trainings to over 500 personnel, including health workers and community volunteers.
  • Promoting 5 Moments for hand hygiene and cleaning protocols in cohort-isolation settings.

Regional News

• Belize hosted a 3-day HAI training in November 2023, supported by the Belize Ministry of Health and PAHO.
• The training focused on surveillance, monitoring, and response to four critical HAIs:
  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections
  • Central line-associated bloodstream infections
  • Hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonias
  • Surgical site infections
• Objectives included:
  • Establishing standardized case definitions for HAI surveillance.
  • Enhancing multimodal strategies for HAI prevention.
  • Strengthening IPC capacity and technical expertise in Belize.
• Participants rated the training highly (9.2/10) and requested PAHO support for further development of IPC leadership structures and practices.

Language and Translation

• The newsletter is prepared by the WHO Infection Prevention and Control Unit and Hub.
• It is available in English and has been translated into French and Spanish in the past.
• However, the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands newsletter is not currently available in French or Spanish due to resource limitations.
