Overall Situation: During week 2 (January 11-17, 2010), meningitis cases totaled 260 with 35 deaths across several African countries. The overall lethality rate was 13.5%. Countries reported cases in Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo.
Key Alerts and Epidemics:
- Burkina Faso had the highest burden (138 cases, 23 deaths, 16.7% lethality). District Pama was in epidemic status (attack rate 11.1/100,000), and district Pô was under alert.
- Chad reported 39 cases, 3 deaths (7.7% lethality), with two districts under alert.
- Nigeria (41 cases, 4 deaths; 9.8% lethality) and other districts in affected countries showed elevated risks.
Lethality and Other Notes: High lethality rates were observed in Benin (18.2%), Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Togo. Pathogens identified included Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Improvements are needed in surveillance completeness, laboratory confirmation, and case management to reduce mortality and detect potential outbreaks.
2009 Comparison: For 2009 weeks 1-2, cases and deaths were higher (457 cases, 67 deaths; total lethality 14.7%). Similar high lethality was noted, and surveillance is advised to be enhanced.
Recommendations: Strengthen surveillance at all levels, improve data reporting promptness, and adhere to national protocols to control spread and reduce case fatality rates.
