Decentralised renewable energy for agriculture in Nepal: Summary Analysis
This report by IRENA assesses Nepal's agricultural sector energy needs and opportunities for decarbonisation through decentralised renewable energy (DRE) solutions. Agriculture accounts for 24% of Nepal's GDP and supports 62% of the population. Key challenges include high fossil fuel dependency (91% of agricultural energy from diesel), weak grid reliability, high youth unemployment leading to male migration, and low mechanisation rates.
Key Findings:
- DRE solutions, particularly for non-mobile equipment (pumps, cold storage, dryers), offer the greatest potential.
- Estimated short-term investment of USD 1.1 million could offset 41% of fossil fuel energy in apple cultivation.
