Global Overview

This update covers data up to 29 August 2021. Global new cases were around 4.4 million, stable compared to the previous week despite nearly two months of increase. Deaths were approximately 67,000, with the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Pacific regions reporting 9% and 16% increases respectively, while South-East Asia saw a 20% decrease. The cumulative cases were nearly 216 million, with deaths just under 4.5 million. High case incidence rates per 100,000 population were in the Americas and Europe. Leading countries by new cases included the USA (8% decrease), India (+17% increase), UK (+8% increase), and Brazil (-16% decrease). Key variants included Alpha (193 countries), Beta (141 countries), Gamma (91 countries), and Delta (170 countries).

Special Focus: Variants of Interest and Concern

WHO updated variant classifications based on evolving data. The Mu variant (B.1.621) was classified as a Variant of Interest, with concerns about immune escape supported by preliminary data. It had over 4500 sequences reported from 39 countries, predominantly in Colombia and Ecuador. Other variants were monitored, with recommendations for strengthening surveillance and risk assessments, especially with rising international travel.

WHO Regional Overviews

• Americas: The region reported ~1.4 million new cases, with the USA accounting for 63% of cases. Cases and deaths were steady or declining, but mortality trends varied across countries, with eight nations experiencing over 50% increases in deaths.
• African Region: New cases and deaths decreased by 7%, despite proportional declines. USA, Brazil, and Mexico were top countries, but mortality remained stable overall.
• Eastern Mediterranean Region: New cases remained steady at ~443,000, while deaths increased 9%. Iran and Iraq reported significant rises in cases, and Iran, Tunisia, and Pakistan in deaths.
• European Region: Cases and deaths plateaued, with the UK and Russia leading in cases. Deaths continued to rise, particularly in Russia and Turkey.
• South-East Asia Region: New cases increased 7% to ~596,000, with India and Thailand seeing significant changes. Deaths decreased 20%, primarily in Indonesia.
• Western Pacific Region: Cases and deaths surged with 7% and 16% increases. Japan and Viet Nam reported substantial case rises, while deaths disproportionately increased in places like French Polynesia.

Summary of Weekly Operational Update
