Summary: Turning the Tide of Pollution in the Black Sea
The Black Sea faces severe environmental degradation due to eutrophication, chemical pollution, and inadequate wastewater management. Generated by nutrient runoff from agriculture, industrial discharges, and municipal wastewater, eutrophication remains the most pressing issue, altering marine ecosystems and threatening economic activities like fisheries and tourism. Atmospheric deposition further exacerbates nutrient loads, while plastic litter and invasive species add to the challenges.
Country-specific assessments reveal that agriculture is responsible for over 43% of nitrogen and significant portions of phosphorus inputs, with coastal urban centers contributing more than 90% of nutrient pollution through wastewater. Heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants also pose health risks. Economic losses from reduced fisheries and tourism are estimated at hundreds of millions USD annually. Geopolitical instability compounds data gaps and implementation challenges.
A coordinated regional approach under the Common Maritime Agenda (CMA) is critical. Key recommendations include: strengthening wastewater treatment with nutrient removal technologies, adopting climate-smart agriculture to reduce fertilizer use, enhancing monitoring systems, enforcing international ballast water conventions, and establishing marine protected areas. Addressing institutional gaps and promoting public-private partnerships can accelerate recovery while supporting livelihoods dependent on ecosystem services.
