SUMMARY OF 2023 WORKPLACE OPPORTUNITY EQUALITY SURVEY REPORT
Purpose and Overview:
This report, based on a survey of 1527 Chinese employees, examines workplace opportunity equality, with a specific focus on gender equality. Respondents come from various industries including retail, internet, fast-moving consumer goods, high-tech, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, legal, real estate, and banking. The study highlights barriers to equality in hiring, promotion, and daily work environments, aiming to provide actionable insights for businesses to foster inclusive workplaces.
Key Findings on Recruitment:
Approximately 77% of respondents reported being asked irrelevant questions during job interviews, such as personal relationship status or family plans, which can affect fairness but is not mainly driven by gender. However, 59-63% of men and women stated that gender-based job restrictions limited their opportunities, especially in high-tech and fast-moving consumer goods industries, where gender preferences are pronounced.
Gender Equality in the Workplace:
Gender bias is prevalent, with problematic practices including unclear promotion mechanisms (perceived by 477 respondents as a major issue), sex-based discrimination, and harassment. Females report higher sensitivity to gender-related questions and lower job opportunities in certain sectors, while industries like education, banking, and finance show greater inclusivity. Female leadership is viewed positively by about 51% of male job seekers, but this varies by industry, with high-tech firms expressing some hesitation.
Recruitment Standards and Attitudes:
Interviewers from foreign companies (65%) are more likely to consider gender than those from domestic firms (36%). Gen Z employees and younger workers (0-5 years experience) demonstrate stronger awareness and sensitivity to gender equality, supporting diverse leadership and seeking equitable hiring processes. Respondents in recruitment roles show significant gender-based decision differences, with only 35% focusing solely on qualifications.
Recommendations for Organizations:
To advance gender equality, companies should: use inclusive language in job listings; standardize interview processes to minimize bias; integrate equality into strategic planning; provide amenities for women, such as flexible work options or childcare support; and implement clear policies against discrimination and harassment, including training and accountability measures. For example, best-in-class firms like L'Oréal and KFC have shown success through women-focused programs.
Conclusion:
Workplace gender inequality persists due to biases in hiring and promotion, but proactive steps—such as standardized recruitment and supportive company cultures—can mitigate these issues. The report concludes that while challenges like opaque processes and harassment remain, businesses that prioritize equality can enhance diversity, attract talent, and foster long-term success, with employee awareness, particularly among younger generations, playing a key role.
