Introduction
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a standardized survey for monitoring youth tobacco use among students aged 13-15 years. Conducted in Senegal in 2013, it fulfilled obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and provided data for tobacco control efforts.
Overall Objective: GYTS tracks tobacco use indicators, secondhand smoke exposure, and media influences on youth.
Methodology
GYTS employed a nationally representative, school-based design with a two-stage sampling method. Students aged 13-15 years participated using self-administered, anonymous questionnaires based on a standard core set, adaptable to local needs. Data collection involved scannable bubble sheets, with an 81.3% response rate from 1,728 students (weighted to 796 in age group).
Key Findings
Tobacco Use
- 11.2% of students used any tobacco product currently (14.9% boys, 6.2% girls).
- 4.5% smoked cigarettes currently (4.7% boys, 3.1% girls).
- 4.3% used smokeless tobacco currently (6.6% boys, 1.8% girls).
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- 27.9% of students were exposed to tobacco smoke at home.
- 45.2% were exposed to tobacco smoke in enclosed public places.
- 42.0% were exposed at outdoor public places.
Media and Advertising
- 70.1% of students noticed anti-tobacco messages in the media.
- 11.9% noticed tobacco advertisements at points of sale.
- Few students were exposed to tobacco branding.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- 45.6% of students thought tobacco smoking is harmful.
- 64.6% favored banning smoking in enclosed public places.
- Students perceived barriers to quitting tobacco, and many supported public smoking bans; however, some attitudes indicated susceptibility to future use.
