报告摘要
The ESCWA Annual SDG Review 2023 examines the role of the private sector in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Arab region. The report highlights several key issues: the private sector underperforms in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects, with low sustainability reporting and poor environmental performance. Social issues such as gender disparities in employment and migrant worker exploitation are prevalent, while governance challenges include corruption and limited transparency. Financially, the region faces a significant SDG financing gap, with low domestic and foreign private investment concentrated in traditional sectors like fossil fuels. Business engagement with SDGs is increasing due to risks like climate change and opportunities in sustainable innovations, but remains largely conventional. The way forward involves enhancing private sector involvement through better policies, harmonizing sustainability standards, and improving project pipelines to leverage opportunities in areas like the circular economy. Recommendations call for collaborative efforts from governments, businesses, and civil society to drive transformative change and achieve the SDGs.
