Summary of the COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update (Edition 136, 30 March 2023)

Global Overview

As of 26 March 2023, the global number of new confirmed cases and deaths in the last 28 days (27 February to 26 March 2023) decreased by 27% and 39%, respectively, compared to the previous 28-day period. The total number of confirmed cases and deaths globally reached over 761 million and over 6.8 million, respectively.

The reported case numbers are considered underestimates of the true infections and reinfections due to reduced testing and reporting delays. The WHO continues to update data from previous weeks to reflect retrospective changes.

SARS-CoV-2 Variants

WHO is tracking one variant of interest (VOI), XBB.1.5, and six variants under monitoring (VUMs): BQ.1, BA.2.75, CH.1.1, XBB, XBF, and XBB.1.16 (added on 22 March 2023). XBB.1.16 is a recombinant of BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75, with three additional mutations in the spike protein (E180V, F486P, and K478R). The F486P mutation is also present in XBB.1.5.

• XBB.1.5: Accounts for 45.1% of cases in epidemiological week 10 (6–12 March 2023), up from 35.6% in week 6 (6–12 February 2023). It has been detected in 90 countries.
• XBB.1.16: Reported in 21 countries with 712 sequences, but no significant increase in hospitalizations, ICU admissions, or deaths has been observed.
• Other VUMs:
  • BQ.1 decreased from 22.7% to 8.4%.
  • BA.2.75 decreased from 7.1% to 1.7%.
  • CH.1.1 and XBF remained stable.

WHO Regional Overviews

African Region

• New cases: Decreased by 10%, with 14,000 new cases reported.
• New deaths: Decreased by 43%, with 25 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in Guinea-Bissau (+3757%), Sao Tome and Principe (+3300%), and Mauritania (+1250%).
• Highest cases: South Africa (8856), Mauritius (1509), and Zambia (708).
• Highest deaths: Zimbabwe (11), Cameroon (3), and Zambia (3).

Region of the Americas

• New cases: Decreased by 29%, with 1.1 million new cases.
• New deaths: Decreased by 38%, with 10,736 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in Chile (+93%), Saint Barthelemy (+93%), and Trinidad and Tobago (+73%).
• Highest cases: USA (678,002), Brazil (184,146), and Chile (88,868).
• Highest deaths: USA (7909), Brazil (989), and Canada (572).

Eastern Mediterranean Region

• New cases: Increased by 142%, with 36,000 new cases.
• New deaths: Increased by 95%, with 464 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in Iran (+360%), Kuwait (+325%), and Libya (+192%).
• Highest cases: Iran (16,829), UAE (4753), and Qatar (4188).
• Highest deaths: Iran (354), Lebanon (37), and Tunisia (25).

European Region

• New cases: Slightly decreased by 1%, with 1.4 million new cases.
• New deaths: Decreased by 7%, with 10,357 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in Kyrgyzstan (+224%), Ukraine (+193%), and Armenia (+174%).
• Highest cases: Russia (333,073), Germany (203,983), and France (161,637).
• Highest deaths: UK (2719), Germany (1085), and Russia (1043).

South-East Asia Region

• New cases: Increased by 152%, with 27,000 new cases.
• New deaths: Decreased by 6%, with 175 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in India (+437%), Maldives (+129%), and Nepal (+89%).
• Highest cases: India (18,130), Indonesia (8405), and Thailand (597).
• Highest deaths: Indonesia (86), India (62), and Thailand (24).

Western Pacific Region

• New cases: Decreased by 49%, with 905,000 new cases.
• New deaths: Decreased by 72%, with 3400 new deaths.
• Notable increases: Observed in Samoa (+928%), Micronesia (+534%), and Marshall Islands (+209%).
• Highest cases: Republic of Korea (270,378), China (255,961), and Japan (242,894).
• Highest deaths: Japan (1519), China (1230), and Republic of Korea (274).

Hospitalizations and ICU Admissions

• Global hospitalizations: 60,080 new hospitalizations reported in the last 28 days (20 February to 19 March 2023), a 9% decrease from the previous 28 days.
• Global ICU admissions: 2470 new ICU admissions, a 5% decrease.
• Countries reporting hospitalizations: 42 (18%) countries provided data.
• Countries consistently reporting: 24 countries (10%) in the European Region, followed by the Eastern Mediterranean (5 countries), South-East Asia (2 countries), etc.
• Notable increases in hospitalizations:
