Summary of "State of the Developer Nation - 19th Edition"
Core Content
This report, titled "State of the Developer Nation - 19th Edition", is part of SlashData's ongoing research into the global developer economy. It provides insights into the evolving needs and preferences of developers based on a survey of over 17,000 developers across 159 countries in Q3 2020. The report highlights key trends and findings across six major themes: developers' extra needs due to COVID-19, programming language communities, adoption of cloud technologies, DevOps practices, open-source values, and emerging technologies.
Main Themes and Key Insights
1. Developers' Extra Needs Due to COVID-19
- Flexibility in working hours and workload is the most pressing need, with 34% (7.2 million) of developers reporting this requirement.
- Collaboration tools and platforms are the most important technical need, with 26% of developers citing this.
- Self-employed developers and those in small companies (up to 20 employees) report fewer new needs due to the pandemic.
- Mental health support is increasingly important, especially for developers in larger companies.
- Technical needs (such as performance, security, and cloud space) are less prominent compared to non-technical needs, indicating a shift in priorities due to the pandemic's impact on work-life balance and remote collaboration.
2. Who is Into DevOps?
- Over 80% of professional developers are involved in DevOps practices.
- CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) is the most common DevOps practice, but only 25% use both CI and CD to fully automate their workflow.
- Operational practices such as monitoring applications in production are less commonly adopted.
- Highly experienced sectors (e.g., enterprise software, cloud services) are more likely to adopt DevOps.
3. Programming Language Communities - An Update
- JavaScript remains the most popular language with 12.4 million active developers globally.
- Python has grown significantly, reaching 9 million users, with 2.2 million net new developers in the past year.
- Kotlin has seen over two-fold growth since 2017, largely due to Google's support for Android development.
- Java is still a cornerstone of mobile and general-purpose development, with 8 million active users.
- C/C++, PHP, and C# are also major languages, though C# has seen slower growth compared to PHP and C/C++.
- Niche languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, and Lua have smaller communities, with Go and Rust showing some growth.
4. What Do Developers Value in Open Source?
- Developers appreciate collaboration and community interaction more than contributing to open-source projects.
- Western European developers value open-source more than developers in other regions.
- South Asian developers highly value contributing to open-source projects, indicating a potential future leadership role in open-source development.
5. Why Do Developers Adopt or Reject Cloud Technologies?
- Pricing and support/documentation are the main factors in cloud technology adoption.
- Pricing is the most important reason for rejection.
- Developers are more interested in features that enhance their development experience than in performance or feature set, as long as minimum requirements are met.
- Access to a community and adequate support are key in developer satisfaction with cloud technologies.
6. Emerging Technologies
- AR and VR are not fully aligned with open-source principles.
- DevOps has reached maturity, with little change in engagement and adoption rates.
- Fog/edge computing is gaining traction but remains underutilized.
- Computer vision is on the path to maturity, with a growing pipeline of developers interested in the field.
- Some advanced technologies are showing signs of fatigue, but adoption continues to rise among those who remain engaged.
Methodology
- The survey reaches tens of thousands of developers every six months.
- It covers 10 areas of development, providing rich and reliable data on language use, tool preferences, and community engagement.
- The data is sourced from SlashData's global surveys, which are conducted in over 160 countries and include more than 30,000 developers annually.
