• Key Countries: Niger and Chad reported epidemic situations. Nigeria and Chad had districts with attack rates exceeding 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • Niger: Agadez district at an epidemic level (attack rate 203/100,000).
  • Chad: Ndjamena East, Abéché, Béré districts at epidemic level (attack rates 11.7, 15.6, 15.7/100,000).
• Burkina Faso and Nigeria returned to normal, with no districts in alert or epidemic status.
• Deaths (Deceases) by Country (approx.):
  • Niger: 20/214 deaths, Risk: 3.9%
  • Chad: 3/41 deaths, Risk: 1.5%
  • Benin: 2/7 deaths, Risk: 28.6%
  • Cote d'Ivoire: 2/8 deaths, Risk: 25.0%
  • Others under 1%
• Benin and Cote d'Ivoire had districts exceeding the alert threshold for meningitis.

II. Synthesis for 2010 (Weeks 1-17)

• Global Situation: Burkina Faso and Nigeria reported epidemics in early weeks but returned to normal.
• Key Countries by Cases (Cumulative 2010): Nigeria, Chad, Burkina Faso.
  • Nigeria: 2,492 Cases (8.1%), 205 Deaths (8.2%)
  • Chad: 2,470 Cases (8.4%), 207 Deaths (8.4%)
  • Burkina Faso: 5,647Cases, 790Deaths (14.0%)
• Overall Mortality: 10.8% of the 19,009 reported cases (2,048 deaths).

III. Laboratory Reports Results (PCR, Latex, Culture)

• Dominant Pathogens:
  • Neisseria meningitidis W135: Predominant in Niger, Ghana, Chad.
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis A: Widespread.
  • No significant Neisseria meningitidis X (NmX) cases outside Burkina Faso.
• Countries by Pathogens: Niger reported the highest numbers and variety (NmW135, NmA, NmB, etc.). Burkina Faso reported NmX cases.

IV. Notes on Data

• Data are weekly and subject to change after verification.
• Alert epidemic thresholds not applied outside the traditional meningitis belt.
• One country (RD Congo) had limited reporting weeks.
