Cyprus Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary (Ages 13-15)
Introduction
The Cyprus Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), conducted in 2005, was a school-based survey targeting students aged 13-15. It assessed tobacco use prevalence and provided data on key determinants such as access/availability, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation, media advertising, and school curriculum. This information can inform comprehensive tobacco control programs.
Methodology
- A two-stage cluster sampling approach was used, with schools selected based on enrollment size and classes randomly chosen.
- Response rates: school response rate 100%, class response rate 99.2%, student response rate 92%, and overall response rate 91.3%.
- Total participants: 10,090 students aged 13-15.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 30.6% had ever smoked cigarettes (boys: 35.5%, girls: 25.7%); 10.9% currently used any tobacco product (boys: 13.2%, girls: 8.4%).
- 10.3% currently smoked cigarettes (boys: 12.3%, girls: 8.2%); 2.9% were daily cigarette smokers (boys: 5.4%, girls: 2.2%).
- 17.6% initiated smoking before age 10; 15.3% of never smokers were likely to initiate smoking in the next year.
- Access and Availability:
- High access: 51.4% bought cigarettes without age refusal issues; low refusal suggests accessibility.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure:
- 86.8% lived in homes where smoking occurred; 87.8% were exposed to smoke outside the home.
- 73.4% believed SHS was harmful; most supported public smoking bans.
- Cessation Attempts:
- 69.3% of current smokers had ever sought help to quit; 61.4% tried to stop in the past year.
- 48.6% wanted to stop smoking; 23.3% smoked first thing in the morning.
- Media and Advertising:
- Similar proportions saw anti-tobacco and pro-cigarette messages: 60.2% saw anti-smoking TV ads to 65.8% pro-smoking; 49.5% newspaper/magazine ads against 55.7% pro-cigarette ads.
- School Curriculum:
- 48.6% received classroom smoking danger education; 39.6% discussed motivations for youth smoking.
- General insight: Significant tobacco use exists among youth, supported by high SHS exposure and weak cessation rates, indicating a need for targeted interventions.
