Colombia’s Power Distribution Networks and Electric Vehicle Demand
Colombia is a leader in Latin American EV adoption, but the growing EV market poses challenges to power grids. Recent analyses show that Colombia's distribution grids can accommodate increased power demand from EVs in the short and medium term without widespread impacts, allowing climate targets to be met.
Four EV penetration scenarios were evaluated: Scenario 266 (based on COP21 and national green growth plans), New Stakes Scenario, Business-as-Usual Scenario, and Reference Country (Chile) Scenario. These assessed energy demand curves and peak power requirements, ranging from 100 GWh/year to 10,000 GWh/year for 2030. Simulations used spatial and temporal models across circuits in major regions like Bogota, Antioquia, and Valle del Cauca.
Key findings indicate no major additional investments are needed, with variations in grid load below 1.5%, but specific constraints may emerge in components like substations or MV lines. Recommendations include integrating EV scenarios into planning, continuous monitoring of demand changes, using time-of-use tariffs, enabling differentiated measurement, and exploring vehicle-to-grid technologies. These steps can mitigate challenges while supporting EV growth.
