R&D Blueprint for Neglected Tropical Diseases Summary

Goal

Accelerate the control, elimination and eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

Objectives

• Develop global collaborative R&D platforms for new "fit-for-purpose" tools (prevent, diagnose, treat, control, eliminate) to meet targets in the 2021-2030 NTD Road Map.
• Aims include:
  • 75% reduction in NTD-related DALY burden by 2030.
  • 90% reduction in people needing interventions by 2030.
  • 100 countries eliminate at least one NTD.
  • Eradicate Guinea-worm and yaws.
  • Eliminate transmission of specific diseases in target countries.
  • 90% of countries include NTD interventions in essential service packages.

Expected Outcomes (of the Blueprint)

1. Shared awareness of R&D priorities.
2. Increased investment for impact.
3. Strengthened coordination and capacity building.
4. Reduced research waste.
5. Greater agility in response to challenges.
6. Faster translation of innovation into real-world application.

Outputs

1. Agreed list of R&D priorities and related actions.
2. Funded systems for dissemination, implementation, M&E, and review of R&D priorities.

Context

• NTDs: Group of 21 diseases disproportionately affecting ~1.6 billion poor worldwide (bacterial, viral, parasitic/fungal, snakebite).
• Current tools are relatively limited, but progress is being made; R&D is seen as crucial for significant ROI.
• Finalized NTD Road Map (2021-2030) by WHO (supported by 73rd WHA). Innovation is critical to achieve targets.

Activities

• Consensus-building process led by endemic countries using CHNRI methodology.
• Identify and prioritize R&D questions across all research types (basic, clinical, social science, epidemiological, health products, operational research).
• Blueprint published by WHO (early 2025). Twice-yearly re-assessments planned.
• Aim: Drive consensus on high-priority R&D questions to influence governments, researchers, funders, policymakers.

Governance

• Steering Group: Co-chaired by WHO's Director NTD (Dr Fall) and Chief Scientist (Sir Farrar); includes health ministers, scientists, a patient group, and an economist.
• Secretariat: WHO Global NTD Programme staff.

Contributors

• Stakeholders register with WHO after CONFLICT OF INTEREST screening: health ministries, academia, civil society, funders, endemic communities, affected people.
