The study established the first WHO International Standard for anti-Nipah virus antibodies. The candidate standard is a freeze-dried pool of serum from 36 convalescent individuals from Bangladesh and Malaysia. It was evaluated in a multi-center international collaborative study involving 18 laboratories. The study demonstrated reduced inter-laboratory variation in both binding and neutralisation assays when data were aligned to the standard. No significant differences were observed between strains across different assay systems. Stability testing showed the standard remains suitable for shipping at ambient temperature, but long-term storage at -20°C is recommended. The International Standard issues an arbitrary unitage of 250 IU/ampoule for both anti-Nipah virus antibodies for neutralisation assays (NIBSC code 22/130nt) and for binding assays against the glycoprotein (NIBSC code 22/130bd). Diagnostic applications include improving serological assays and supporting epidemiological studies.
