UN Global Action Plan on Child Wasting: Call to Action Summary

The global food and nutrition crisis has worsened dramatically, with an estimated 828 million people facing hunger globally, a significant increase since the COVID-19 pandemic began. In 15 worst-affected countries, 40 million children under five live in severe food poverty, 27 million experience food insecurity, and 8 million suffer from severe wasting, the most life-threatening form of child undernutrition. This crisis is exacerbated by disruptions in global food systems, soaring prices, and climate extremes, putting vulnerable populations, especially in conflict and humanitarian contexts, at greater risk.

The UN Global Action Plan on Child Wasting emphasizes a comprehensive, multisectoral approach to prevent and treat child wasting. Key actions include:

• Enhancing analysis of wasting determinants to guide integrated strategies across food, health, water and sanitation, and social protection systems.
• Promoting preventive measures such as breastfeeding, appropriate complementary foods, and micronutrient supplementation.
• Increasing access to essential nutrition services, including early detection and treatment of wasting through community and facility-based programs.
• Strengthening multisector coordination at local, national, regional, and global levels to address immediate, underlying, and basic causes of undernutrition.

Priority interventions focus on affordability and availability of nutritious diets, specialized foods in emergencies, joint nutrition and WASH programming, social protection for vulnerable households, and education on positive nutrition practices. Resources are insufficient, making immediate and coordinated action critical to save lives and protect the most vulnerable children and women.

This call to action advocates for a unified response supported by governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society to accelerate acceleration in crisis-affected areas.
