Summary of "A Political Rhetoric Test" (Pew Research Center, Dec 2011)

This report analyzes the American public's reactions to political terms ("Capitalism", "Socialism", "Libertarian", "Conservative", "Liberal", "Progressive") from December 2011, comparing them to data from April 2010 (n=1521 adults total).

Key Findings

Capitalism: Reactions remained largely unchanged from 2010 (40% Negative vs. 50% Positive). Affluent Americans (68% Positive) and conservative Republicans (66% Positive) were most positive; low-income Americans (39% Positive/47% Negative) and liberal Democrats (vs. Tea Party supporters) showed more negative or mixed views.
Socialism: Highly divisive (31% Positive vs. 60% Negative). Low-income Americans (43% Positive/22% Negative) and Blacks showed more positive reactions compared to wealthy Americans (22% Positive) and Conservatives (90% Negative). Age 65+ strongly negative (72% Negative). Liberals (39% Negative/50% Positive) were generally more positive than Conservatives (30% Positive/62% Negative) vs. Capitalism, where分歧 was narrower.
Libertarian: Mixed reaction (38% Positive vs. 37% Negative). Primarily a generational divide (stronger positive views among those under 30). Conservative/Liberal: Both terms received more positive than negative reactions. "Conservative" received more positive reactions (62% Positive) than "Liberal" (50% Positive). This mainly reflects the higher proportion of Conservatives vs. Liberals identifying as such. Younger Americans (under 30) are more positive toward both terms compared to older Americans, but the reaction to "Conservative" was largely consistent across age groups.
Progressive vs. Liberal: "Progressive" was more favorably viewed than "Liberal" (67% Positive vs. 50% Positive). Similar acceptance among Democrats for both terms, but Republicans showed a stark contrast with 55% positive for "Progressive" and 20% for "Liberal".
