GYTS Summary: Antigua and Barbuda (Ages 13-15)
Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Antigua and Barbuda was conducted in 2000 using a two-stage cluster sample design. It surveyed students in forms 1 to 4 (ages 13-15) to assess tobacco use prevalence and its determinants. The survey achieved high response rates: 100% school response rate, 100% class response rate, and a 91.7% student response rate, with 1,183 participants.
Key Findings
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- 22.0% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (Boys: 26.1%, Girls: 18.2%)
- 13.0% currently use any tobacco product (Boys: 13.8%, Girls: 11.8%)
- 4.9% currently smoke cigarettes (Boys: 5.2%, Girls: 4.2%)
- 9.6% currently use other tobacco products (Boys: 10.8%, Girls: 8.4%)
Determinants and Exposure
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 17.4% live in homes where others smoke, 46.2% are exposed outside the home, 66.4% believe SHS is harmful, and 73.2% support banning smoking in public places.
- Access to Cigarettes: 33.5% smoke at home, 11.8% buy cigarettes from stores.
- Family Smoking: 19.5% have at least one parent who smokes.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- 26.9% think smoking increases social connections for boys, 14.5% for girls.
- Knowledge: Students are exposed to anti-smoking media (77.9%) and pro-cigarette ads (58.1% in media, 10.3% from offers).
- Cessation: 59.1% have ever received help to quit smoking.
School Influence
- 42.4% were taught about tobacco dangers, 52.2% learned about effects, and 29.4% discussed smoking reasons in class.
Media and Advertising
- High exposure to both anti-smoking messages and pro-tobacco ads in the past 30 days.
