Japan's COVID-19 Policy Update (October 4, 2021)

• Reduced Quarantine Period: From October 1, 2021, Japan shortened the self-isolation period for fully vaccinated travelers with Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca vaccines from 14 to 10 days, contingent on a negative PCR test result on or after the tenth day.
• End of Emergency: The state of emergency in Tokyo and 18 other prefectures, along with the quasi-state of emergency in eight prefectures, was lifted on October 1, 2021, marking the first time since April 2021 no part of Japan was under such measures.
• Entry Restrictions: Japan kept borders closed to nonresident foreign nationals, except in special circumstances. Visa applications were suspended until the ban ended.
• Travel Requirements: All inbound travelers must undergo a PCR test within 72 hours before departure, check temperatures for 14 days prior, and complete a questionnaire. Fully vaccinated individuals may qualify for reduced quarantine if entering from designated countries.
• Quarantine Rules: Apply for 14 days post-arrival, prohibiting public transportation use during quarantine. Vaccinated travelers may exempt from 3-day government-designated stay if entry rules are met.
• Documentation: Vaccination certificate must include name, date of birth, vaccine name, dates/doses, and be in Japanese or English, with translation if needed.
