Summary of Global Carbon Storage in Mangrove Ecosystems
This report provides an assessment of mangrove carbon storage using global datasets for biomass and soil organic carbon stocks.
Background
Mangroves store significant carbon despite small geographic extent, providing critical ecosystem services. They were increasingly protected after 2000, slowing degradation rates. This assessment supports The World Bank's Changing Wealth of Nations report.
Methods
- Extent Data: Used Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) layers for 1996, 2007, 2010, 2015, 2018, and 2020
- Biomass: Used Simard et al. (2019) AGB dataset with IPCC Tier 1 root-shoot ratios
- Soil Carbon: Used Sanderman et al. (2018) soil organic carbon dataset
- Carbon Pools: Calculated for aboveground (AGB), belowground (BGB), and dead organic matter (DOM)
Results
- Global Carbon Stock (2020): Total carbon storage decreased by approximately 4% between 1996 and 2020 from 7,303 to 7,301 MMT of carbon
- Regional Distribution: East Asia and Pacific contained 35.5% (6,018 MMT) of global stock in 2020, down from 37.7% in 1996
- Countries: Indonesia consistently had the highest total carbon stocks and area
- Area Change: Net loss of approximately 676,000 ha (3%) between 1996 and 2020, with particularly high losses in South and Southeast Asia
Limitations
- Estimated carbon stocks represent initial assessments, not validated for carbon credit calculation
- SOC estimates may be conservative due to limited soil depth data (>1m)
- Global datasets have uncertainties ranging from 0-94% across regions and parameters
Significance
Provides a standardized dataset for future updates and NDC planning, highlighting both current carbon storage and the need to conserve mangrove ecosystems.
