Mexico - Monterrey Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The Mexico - Monterrey Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2000 among 1517 students aged 13-15 from years 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Monterrey, Mexico. It used a two-stage cluster sample design with high response rates: 96.0% school, 98.4% class, and 87.3% student, leading to an overall 82.5% participation rate.
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 52.0% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys (57.9%) higher than girls (46.4%).
- 21.7% currently use any tobacco product, including cigarettes and other forms; 19.0% smoke cigarettes currently, and 7.3% use other tobacco products.
- Among never smokers, 25.0% are likely to initiate smoking next year.
- Determinants of Tobacco Use:
- Access/Availability and Price: 58.6% buy cigarettes in stores.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure with 58.0% exposed in places outside home, and 77.6% believe SHS is harmful.
- Cessation: 51.9% want to stop smoking, 56.8% have tried to quit in the past year, and 63.6% received help to stop.
- Media and Advertising: 87.1% saw anti-smoking media messages, but 92.7% saw pro-tobacco ads on billboards, and 87.4% in newspapers or magazines.
- School Curriculum: 58.8% learned about smoking dangers in class, and 50.7% discussed reasons for smoking their age.
- Attitudes and Knowledge:
- 66.7% think smoke from others is harmful, and 77.6% support banning smoking in public places.
- 25.0% have seen objects with cigarette brand logos.
- High SHS exposure in homes and public spaces.
