NSFC 2025 Explorable AI Research Funding Priorities

I. Focus Area

China aims to fund basic research in Explainable and Generalizable Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Methods.

II. Scientific Objectives

1. Address fundamental AI questions including deep learning robustness, explainability, and data dependence.
2. Uncover the basic principles of machine learning.
3. Develop explainable and generalizable AI methods for scientific applications.

III. Core Scientific Problems

• (i) Deep Learning Principles: Deep dependencies of deep learning, working mechanisms, and theory development (approximation theory, generalization).
• (ii) Explainable & Generalizable AI Methods: New AI principles, data-efficient learning, model training platforms, and infrastructure.
• (iii) Scientific Applications: Advanced scientific models (physics, materials science, biology) and databases development.

IV. 2025 Funding Project Types & Directions

1. Cultivation Projects

• Research Directions:
  • Novel network architectures, pre-training/self-supervised methods for diverse data.
  • Deep learning foundational theory (e.g., function space theory, memory compression).
  • Large model fundamental problems, data-centric learning, and AI in scientific domains (fusion, drug design, nuclear research).

2. Key Support Projects

• Research Directions:
  • Logic-integrated inference, geometric physics generation, brain-inspired AI, cognitive frameworks, multi-agent systems, explainable AI in chemistry, virtual cell tech, rare disease diagnostics, biological extreme environment modeling.

3. Integration Projects

• Selected for funding:
  • Memory-reasoning separation models, structure-performance relationships in materials, and intelligent OS-environment integration.

4. Eligibility & Application

• Leadership positions required; current postdocs/PhDs ineligible.
• Collaboration limits (2-4 partners per project category), total 9 participants max per project.
• Applications due March 20-21, 2025; paperless online submissions.

V. Funding Figures

1. Cultivation: ~RMB 400k/project × 3 years (~15 projects).
2. Key Support: ~RMB 3M/project × 4 years (~6 projects).
3. Integration: ~RMB 8-12M/project × 4 years (~3 projects).
