Background
This is the second issue of the REMPAN e-Newsletter for December 2010. It highlights activities, upcoming events, and networks related to the WHO Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance Network (REMPAN).
Editoriale Notes
- The 13th WHO REMPAN Meeting will be held in Nagasaki, Japan, from February 16-18, 2011.
- Japan contributes unique expertise in radiation effects research and training for radiation emergency medicine.
Reports of Events
Several regional and international meetings and seminars focused on radiation emergency medicine took place, including:
- A sub-regional meeting in Moscow on October 22, 2010.
- The 4th International Conference on "Chronic Radiation Exposure: Small-Dose Effects" in Chelyabinsk on November 9-11, 2010.
- Seminars on "Advanced Medicine Technologies" and "Radiation Medicine in Research and Practice" in St. Petersburg and Würzburg.
Network News
- The National Center for Radiobiology and Radiation Protection in Sofia, Bulgaria, joined REMPAN.
- The Russian National Radiation Epidemiological Registry (NRER) provides data for epidemiological studies related to radiation accidents, particularly Chernobyl.
Training Activities
- Training courses were conducted on medical response to radiation emergencies in China.
- The Virtual Community Reception Center (vCRC) training tool for emergency medical personnel was described.
New Publications
- Handbooks on medical actions in radiological emergencies were mentioned as new resources.
