Unemployment Rate in the OECD: January 2024 Analysis
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reported a stable unemployment rate in January 2024, at 4.8%, the lowest level since the start of 2001. This rate has remained below 5.0% since July 2022.
- Overall Stability: The unemployment rate remained unchanged across 23 OECD countries but increased in 6 and decreased in 3.
- Decrease in Unemployed Persons: The total number of unemployed persons decreased to 33.5 million. However, this decrease was primarily driven by a reduction in unemployment among younger workers (aged 15-24).
- Gender Gap: Women's unemployment rate stayed at 5.0% in the OECD, slightly higher than the men's rate, which was also stable. A significant gender gap was observed in Greece, Colombia, Türkiye, and Spain. Women had higher unemployment rates than men in 21 OECD countries, lower rates in 16, and equal rates in Sweden.
- Age Differences: The unemployment rate decreased for workers aged 25 and above but remained unchanged for younger workers.
- European Context: In the European Union (EU) and the euro area, unemployment rates remained at record lows (6.0% and 6.4% respectively). Rates were stable or increased in most EU countries, except Austria which saw a marked decrease.
- Non-Euro OECD Countries: Unemployment rates were generally stable or declined outside of Europe. Colombia recorded the largest decrease.
- Regional Fluctuations: In February 2024, Canada reported a stable unemployment rate of 5.8%, slightly lower than its record low since the start of 2001. Conversely, the United States saw its rate rise to 3.9%, its highest level since January 2022.
Table 2 and 4 provide additional context on age and gender differences. The fourth quarter and initial month of 2024 showed stability or changes, with youth unemployment generally higher than for older workers.
