World Local Production Forum Objectives and Evolution

The World Local Production Forum (WLPF) was established in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic to address the urgent need for local production of essential health products. Local production is critical for achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and global health security by enhancing resilience, ensuring equitable access to health products, and driving economic development. It improves availability and affordability of medicines and vaccines, strengthens emergency preparedness, and supports a knowledge-based economy.

Progress and Challenges

Significant progress has been made in capacity-building since the 2023 WLPF, including WHO's ecosystem assessments, workforce training initiatives, and partnerships for technology transfer. Challenges include scaling up manufacturing, ensuring private sector engagement, and addressing supply chain vulnerabilities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Priorities for Future

The 2025 fourth WLPF will focus on strengthening local production ecosystems, fostering private sector collaboration, and building a skilled workforce. Priorities include evidence-based ecosystem assessments, partnerships for sustainable business models, and capacity building across public and private sectors.

Recommendations

From the third WLPF, key recommendations include aligning efforts with national strategies, leveraging digitalization and green production, expanding partnerships, and enhancing financing models to support local production and technology transfer.
