报告摘要
Summary of "Effect of a Lottery Intervention on Gender-Based Violence among Female Sex Workers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Results from a Randomized Trial"
Objective:
To assess the impact of a lottery-based financial incentive on gender-based violence (GBV) among female sex workers (FSW) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as part of a larger HIV/STI prevention trial.
Methods:
- Conducted within the RESPECT II randomized controlled trial involving 2,206 FSW randomized into control (baseline testing, counseling, and bi-weekly text messages) or lottery groups (same plus weekly lottery for a cash prize if STI tests were negative).
- Lottery awarded 100,000 TZS (~$50 USD) for negative syphilis and trichomonas tests.
- Intent-to-treat analysis used statistical methods including unadjusted prevalence differences, multiple imputation, inverse-probability weighting, and g-computation to account for missing data (49.4% lost to follow-up).
Results:
- GBV, intimate partner violence (IPV), and non-partner violence declined in both groups over the study period.
- Endline analysis showed a trend toward lower violence prevalence in the lottery group compared to the control group, but differences were not statistically significant.
- High attrition limited power to detect small effects.
Conclusion:
The lottery intervention did not significantly affect violence outcomes. It neither posed risks nor demonstrated benefits for FSW, highlighting the need for further research due to high attrition and the study's reliance on a specific incentive mechanism.
