Video Calling Adoption in America (2010)
According to a Pew Research Center report from October 2010, 19% of American adults have tried video calling or video chat using online platforms or cell phones. Of this group, 17% have done so online, 6% via cell phones, and there is overlap where individuals use both methods (counted once). This translates to 23% of internet users (74% of adults are internet users) and 7% of cell phone owners (85% of adults have cell phones) participating in video calls, chats, or teleconferences.
Key trends show a slight increase from 20% of internet users in April 2009 to 23% in 2010 (up to 4% of internet users daily). Demographic breakdowns reveal higher adoption among households earning over $75,000 (34% for online, 10% for cell phones), younger adults (e.g., 29% for ages 18-29 online), urban/suburban residents (e.g., 27% online), and men for online video calls (26% vs. 20% for women). The survey, based on 3,001 adults completed in August-September 2010, indicated first-time inclusion of cell phone video call data in the report.
