EMTAJOVEN 1999 Venezuela: First National Youth Tobacco Use Survey
The first report of EMTAJOVEN (Encuesta Mundial sobre Tabaquismo en Jóvenes), conducted in 1999 but dated for January 2000, is a pioneering survey in Venezuela focusing on tobacco use among students aged 13-15 years. It was part of a global initiative by UNICEF and WHO to combat tobacco addiction in young people, with the goal of creating evidence-based interventions and fostering international collaboration.
Methodology included a cross-sectional school-based survey using a two-stage sampling design, covering 103 schools and 3779 respondents with a 92.9% response rate. A comprehensive questionario was developed, with local adaptations for Venezuela, and data collected through self-administered questionnaires.
Key findings revealed high tobacco use prevalence, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco (chimó). Specifically, 6.8% were current cigarette smokers, with higher rates in older grades and private schools. For example, by ninth grade, about one in four students used tobacco regularly. Marketing influences, parental and peer factors, and access to tobacco products were also documented.
This report underscored the need for targeted interventions in adolescents, providing vital data to reverse smoking trends and support the "Creating a Generation Free from Tobacco" project. Collaboration among government, NGOs, and health organizations was highlighted as a strength.
