SRv6 Header Compression Whitepaper Summary
SRv6 is an IPv6-based network protocol that enables simplified routing, global programmability, and network automation, making it ideal for emerging services like 5G and cloud-network synergy. It uses 128-bit IPv6 addresses as Segment IDs (SIDs) and incorporates Segment Routing source routing, offering high scalability and flexibility. However, SRv6 faces deployment challenges such as increased packet header overhead due to multiple SIDs, reduced payload efficiency, and hardware incompatibility, as the SRH can grow large, consuming more bandwidth and requiring network device upgrades.
To overcome these issues,SRC-SID (Compressed SID) compression offers a standardized solution for reducing header size, improving payload efficiency, and enabling smooth network evolution. Originating from IETF SPRING Working Group discussions, the C-SID solution merges techniques similar to G-SRD and uSID, providing two flavors—REPLACE-C-SID and NEXT-C-SID—which are now defined in RFC9800. This has been tested in multi-vendor interoperability trials and deployed commercially by operators like China Mobile and African carriers, demonstrating bandwidth savings and operational benefits.
Deployment considerations involve SID assignment strategies, Inter-AS routing using IGP and BGP, traffic visualization for SLA monitoring, and protection mechanisms like Hot-Standby and TI-LFA for failure recovery. Key benefits include efficient packet carriage, high scalability for large networks, and seamless integration with existing SRv6 features. Notable case studies show SRv6 compression enhancing services like cloud networking、mobile backhaul, and accelerated traffic paths in networks managed by SDN controllers.
Globally, SRv6 compression is rapidly adopted on over 350 networks, supported by vendor readiness and IETF standards. Future prospects involve ongoing operational standardization and expansion of deployment in varied IP services.Network operators can leverage this technology for improved revenue generation and enabling intelligent, programmable networks.
