报告摘要
Agtech VC Trends Summary
The 2024 agtech venture capital (VC) sector experienced a mixed year, with overall deal value and count declining due to high interest rates and unfavorable market conditions. However, the fourth quarter showed a strong rebound, with increased deal activity reaching $1.8 billion across 149 transactions, up 8.9% quarter-over-quarter from Q3 2024.
Precision agriculture emerged as the leading segment in 2024, attracting $2.1 billion across 238 deals, driven by innovations in automation, AI, and remote monitoring. Asia showed remarkable growth, accounting for three of the top ten deals globally, with the largest being a $200 million Series C in Malaysia's Aerodyne for agricultural drones. In contrast, indoor farming faced setbacks, with 28 companies ceasing operations or going bankrupt, including Bowery's shutdown.
Key technologies influencing the sector include AI, robotics, gene editing, and biological inputs, such as biofertilizers, aligning with consumer demand for sustainable practices. While early-stage investments fell by 33.7% YoY, late-stage deals dominated, with notable Q4 transactions like Sound Agriculture's $100 million Series D and Oishii's $150 million Series B.
Regionally, North America remained the top market for VC funding, but Asia's contributions are growing. Exits decreased in 2024, with only 35 transactions totaling $1.1 billion, including public listings and acquisitions like Synspective's Tokyo Stock Exchange IPO and Invetx's acquisition.
Looking ahead, the sector is expected to rebound in 2025, supported by economic recovery, sustainable growth initiatives, and advancements in innovative companies focusing on food security and climate change mitigation.
