Epidemiological Situation Summary for Week 04, 2022

During week 04, 2022, there were a total of 319 suspected meningitis cases reported across multiple countries in West Africa, with 17 deaths recorded, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 5.3%. A total of 16 countries submitted weekly epidemiological reports, with 17 districts crossing the alert threshold and 1 district crossing the epidemic threshold. Notable districts include:

• Benin: Cobly district with an attack rate (AR) of 3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
• Ethiopia: 9 woredas in 5 regions (e.g., Benishangul Gumuz, Dire Dawa) with varying ARs.
• Ghana: Builsa South and Nandom districts with ARs of 4.9 and 3.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
• Niger: Dungass district remained in alert status.
• DR Congo: Kalonge zone crossed the epidemic threshold with an AR of 11.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
  Countries like South Sudan and Chad also reported cases, with Chad having a high CFR of 42.1% in cumulative data. Data completeness averaged around 76.6%.

Cumulative Epidemiological Summary for Weeks 01-04, 2022

From week 1 to week 4, the total number of suspected cases increased to 1,427, with 77 deaths and a overall CFR of 5.4%. Countries such as Ethiopia and DR Congo had high caseloads, with partial or no vaccination coverage in some areas. Benin and Burkina Faso showed lower CFRs. Out of the 20 reporting countries, the majority reported full or partial data completeness, averaging 99.4%. Recommendations emphasize strengthening surveillance by subdividing districts with over 100,000 inhabitants and improving laboratory diagnosis for at least 50% of suspected cases.

Laboratory Data Summary

Nine countries shared laboratory data, with Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) being the most frequently identified pathogen in six out of eight cases. Notably, Niger reported 28 cases of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (NmC). Laboratory confirmation rates were low in some regions, and countries are encouraged to request Trans-Isolate media, reagents, and lab materials to enhance diagnostic capacity.

Based on the 18th Annual Meningitis Meeting and MenAfリNet partners meeting recommendations:

• Strengthen meningitis surveillance and predictive modeling by October 2022.
• Implement innovative strategies for case detection and sample transportation in the context of COVID-19.
• Enhance laboratory capacity, including genomic surveillance for priority pathogens, by December 2022.
• Accelerate laboratory confirmation of cases and support local vaccines for reactive campaigns.
• Submit requests for MenAfriVac to GAVI and update national preparedness plans by September 2022.
• Foster collaboration between governments and civil society for care of meningitis survivors and resource mobilization.
